How Veterans Can Get Migraine Headaches
Migraine headaches are more than just severe headaches—they can be completely disabling. Migraines often come with intense throbbing or pulsing pain, usually on one side of the head.
Veterans are more likely to experience migraines due to the unique stresses and conditions they encounter during service.
Some of the common causes include:
- Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs): Head injuries sustained in combat or training can trigger chronic migraines.
- Exposure to Chemicals: Contact with toxic chemicals or burn pits can lead to long-term health problems, including migraines.
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): The mental strain of PTSD can manifest physically as migraine headaches.
- Stress and Anxiety: The high levels of stress and anxiety faced during and after service can be a significant trigger for migraines.
How the VA Rates Migraine Headaches for Disability
The VA rates migraine headaches based on how frequently they occur and how much they impact your ability to work and perform everyday activities.
Here’s how the VA typically rates migraines:
- 0% Rating: Migraines that occur less frequently and do not significantly impact your ability to function may receive a 0% rating. This means the VA acknowledges your condition, but it isn’t severe enough to qualify for monthly compensation.
- 10% Rating: Migraines that occur once every two months on average may qualify for a 10% rating.
- 30% Rating: If you experience migraines about once a month, and they force you to lie down or miss work, you may receive a 30% rating.
- 50% Rating: If your migraines occur very frequently—several times a month—and are so severe that they leave you unable to work, you could qualify for a 50% rating, the highest available for migraines.
Secondary Conditions Linked to Migraine Headaches
Migraines don’t just come alone—they can lead to or worsen other medical conditions.
Some secondary conditions that might arise from migraines include:
- Depression and Anxiety: The chronic pain and disability caused by migraines can take a toll on your mental health, leading to depression or anxiety.
- Sleep Disorders: Migraines can disrupt your sleep patterns, leading to insomnia or other sleep disorders.
- Neck Pain: Frequent migraines can lead to or aggravate chronic neck pain, particularly if you have poor posture during an attack.
- Vision Problems: The visual disturbances (aura) associated with migraines can sometimes lead to more serious eye conditions.
Getting these secondary conditions recognized by the VA can increase your overall VA disability ratings and benefits for migraine headaches.
Additionally, if your condition prevents you from working, you might be eligible for Total Disability Individual Unemployability (TDIU), which allows you to receive benefits at the 100% disability rate even if your migraine headache rating is less than 100%.
Qualifying for TDIU:
- One disability rated at least 60%, or
- Multiple disabilities with a combined rating of 70% or more, with one disability rated at least 40%.
How Much Money Can You Get Monthly from VA Disability Benefits?
The amount you receive depends on your VA disability rating for migraine headaches.
The rating is a percentage measured by the severity of your service-connected condition. In other words, the more severe your condition, the higher your rating. If you have multiple conditions, the VA uses a special formula to combine them into one overall rating.
Here’s a general breakdown of what you might expect:
These figures can increase if you have dependents or if your condition worsens over time. For more information, go to our VA Disability Compensation Page.
A higher rating not only means more financial support each month, it can also qualify you for additional benefits, such as increased access to VA healthcare services, vocational training and housing assistance.
