Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Larynx Caused by Burn Pit Exposure
If you were a U.S. service member stationed in the Southwest Asia theater of operations beginning Aug. 2, 1990, to the present, or Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Syria or Djibouti beginning Sept. 19, 2001, to the present, and have developed squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx (a type of laryngeal cancer) within 10 years of your separation, the VA acknowledges that your illness was caused by a burn pit.
This is called a presumptive condition and you qualify for VA benefits.
Why Are Burn Pits Dangerous?
Burn pits were used at military sites outside the United States to get rid of unwanted products–such as ordinance, paint, and medical waste. The toxins and smoke released by these burn pits can affect the skin, eyes, respiratory system, cardiovascular system, and gastrointestinal tract, resulting in serious illness.

What is Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Larynx?
Squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx is a rare type of throat cancer that forms in the tissues of the larynx. This is the part of the throat that is used for breathing, swallowing, and talking. It is commonly referred to as laryngeal cancer.
Tests that examine the throat and neck are used to diagnose this type of throat cancer. These can include a physical exam, a biopsy, CT scan, and other diagnostic procedures.
The chance of recovery from laryngeal cancer depends on how early it is caught, the size of the tumor and whether or not it has spread to other parts of the body.
What are the Symptoms of Laryngeal Cancer?
- A sore throat or cough that does not go away
- Trouble or pain when swallowing
- Ear pain
- A lump in the neck or throat
- A change or hoarseness in the voice
