Next month, we celebrate Presidents’ Day, and what better way to spend a long weekend than brushing up on our history and visiting one of our nation’s many Presidential landmarks.
With well over 350 Presidential landmarks scattered throughout the county, chances are there’s one not far from you.
Statues, Memorials, Libraries, and More
It’s not hard to imagine that the most visited Presidential landmark in the U.S. is the Lincoln Memorial. With over 6 million yearly visitors, it isn’t just the most popular Presidential landmark, it’s the most visited monument in the entire country.
But monuments aren’t the only landmarks Presidential history buffs find interesting.
Did you know that the Presidential Library system is composed of 15 Presidential Libraries? These Libraries bring together the documents and artifacts of a President and his administration so the public can study and discuss them without regard for political considerations or affiliations.
Birthplaces and early childhood homes of our nation’s presidents are also popular visiting spots. Mount Vernon, President George Washington’s home from childhood until his death in 1799, is located 15 miles south of Washington, D.C and remains a working farm as well as a museum and education center.
Federal Hall National Memorial, located in New York, stands on the site of the original Federal Hall, the first capital of the United States. Today, it’s a museum and memorial to the birth of a nation. Inside you’ll find a piece of the balcony that George Washington stood on as he was inaugurated our first president in 1789. The Bill of Rights was passed at this location and in 1765, the Stamp Act Congress protested “taxation without representation.”
And of course, there is no landmark more “Presidential” than the White House itself. Every President since John Adams has called the White House both home and office and public tours are now available once more. Note: White House tours must be scheduled at least 21 days in advance through the office of your U.S. House of Representatives.
