POTS and Long-COVID

Tucker Disability Law | April 24, 2023

Physicians are now seeing an increase in Nervous System Disorders in Long-COVID sufferers.

According to the National Library of Medicine, recent reports show that 2% – 14% of COVID-19 survivors develop POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) and 9% – 61% of survivors experience POTS-like symptoms, many of them debilitating.

What exactly is POTS? And if you’re a COVID survivor experiencing POTS-like symptoms, is long-term disability an option for you?

What is POTS?

POTS or Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, is a chronic condition that affects the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS).

The autonomic nervous system is a network of nerves that controls unconscious processes in your body. These are things that happen without you thinking about them, such as breathing and your heart beating.

Your autonomic nervous system is always active, even when you’re asleep, and is key to your continued survival. When this system becomes damaged it can cause unpredictable symptoms. And there is no cure.

If you have POTS your body can’t keep your blood pressure steady and stable. This causes a variety of symptoms, such as:

  • Lightheadedness or fainting
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Brain fog
  • Memory problems
  • Chest pain
  • Tachycardia (heart rate above 100 beats per minute)
  • Heart palpitations
  • Chronic headaches
  • Spiking pulse rate

COVID-Induced POTS and Long-Term Disability Benefits

If you are one of the estimated 4 million Americans suffering from long COVID and have developed a condition such as POTS, then long-term disability may be an option for you.

The key to getting and keeping your long-term disability benefits is to prove to your insurance company that your symptoms are severe enough that you can no longer work.

How do you do this?

You start by establishing a strong relationship with your physician. This means keeping all your doctor appointments, and just as importantly, letting your doctor know exactly how your symptoms interfere with your daily life

To help you do this, Tucker Disability Law has put together a Capability Journal. This proven-to-work journal, created for clients just like you, will make it easy to keep a daily log you can show to your doctor.
