Did you know that heart disease is one of the most common conditions for filing a disability insurance claim? But the diagnosis of a heart condition isn’t enough to qualify for long-term disability. If a heart condition is keeping you from working, you’ll need to provide your insurance company plenty of evidence to prove your case.
February is National Heart Health month, a time to raise awareness of the seriousness of cardiac disease. Keep reading to learn what you need to do to get your long-term disability claim for cardiac disease approved.
Cardiovascular Disease and Long-Term Disability
Every year over 800,000 Americans suffer from a heart attack. But heart attacks only make up a portion of the types of cardiovascular disease.
Those include such conditions as:
- Angina
- Arrhythmia
- Atrial Fibrillation
- Cardiomyopathy
- Congenital Heart Disease
- Congestive heart failure
- Coronary artery disease
- DVT (deep venous thrombosis)
- Heart attack
- Heart valve issue
- Hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Palpitations
- Stroke
Symptoms of heart disease may include chest pain, fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness, swelling, and more. These symptoms can range from mild to severe, which is why most insurance companies will automatically deny your claim.
In order to prove to the insurance company that your cardiac issues are severe enough that you can no longer work in any capacity, you must provide strong evidence.
This evidence comes in the form of your medical records that will include test and lab results, as well as a form (Attending Physician Statement) signed by your doctor.
To help you get started, Tucker Disability Law has put together a FREE Insider’s Guide to getting your doctor to fill out your APS form.
Included in the guide is our exclusive Capability Journal. This journal will help you keep track of the way your symptoms interfere with your ability to perform everyday tasks and work assignments.
