I recently had the opportunity to travel to Normandy. Touring the D-Day sites, I was simply awestruck by the sheer number of obstacles the Americans faced when they landed. And It got me thinking about the challenges we face in our own practices.
Like you, I’m a law firm owner. And just like you, I encounter my fair share of problems. Things happen; it’s the nature of the business.
Whether it’s a tricky case, a staffing issue, or the everyday challenges of running a business, obstacles are part of the journey. So, the real question is: How do we deal with them?

This might sound overly simple, but it’s crucial. As the old saying goes, “defining the problem is 90% of the way to the solution”. Take the time to really figure out what you’re confronting. Don’t just treat the symptoms; dig deep to identify the root cause. Is it a process issue? A communication breakdown? A resource constraint? Clear identification sets the stage for a targeted solution. - Include Your Team
You don’t have to go it alone. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the power of collaboration. As attorneys, we often work independently, but your team is an invaluable resource. The people you’ve brought in to help solve problems for your clients can also help you solve problems in your law firm. Brainstorming with your staff can bring fresh perspectives and innovative solutions you might not have considered on your own. - It’s Okay to Get Past It
Don’t dwell on the negative. It’s easy to get bogged down by setbacks, but dwelling on them won’t help you move forward. Allow yourself to process the issue, but then make a conscious effort to let it go. Get a good night’s sleep, and approach it with a fresh mind the next day. You’d be amazed how taking a break can lead to clarity and solutions.

On a lighter note, if you’re thinking about an international trip, I highly recommend Normandy. The people are incredibly welcoming to Americans. You’ll see American flags everywhere, the food is fantastic, and the countryside is stunningly beautiful. It’s a great place to unwind and gain a new perspective.
