When We Show Up for Veterans, We Mean It

About the Event

What Is Operation Stand Down?

Operation Stand Down is a two-day annual event hosted by One Community Now, a Florida-based nonprofit dedicated to serving homeless and at-risk veterans. Held each spring in New Port Richey, the event brings over 500 veterans together with dental teams, medical providers, attorneys, employment counselors, barbers, judges, and volunteers — all under one roof, all free of charge.

It’s the kind of event that doesn’t happen without people willing to show up.

Want to Get Involved?

One Community Now welcomes volunteers, sponsors, and donors year-round. Whether you have an hour, a weekend, or the resources to help fund services for the veterans in your community, there’s a way to get involved.

Two Days That Change Lives

For two days every spring, a parking lot in New Port Richey, Florida becomes one of the most important places in the state for veterans who need a hand up. This year, it was the site of Operation Stand Down 2026 — a 14-year-old tradition that brings together hundreds of veterans and a small army of volunteers, attorneys, medical professionals, and local agencies, all under one roof.

The mission is simple and serious: give homeless and at-risk veterans access, in one place, to the kinds of services that are hard to piece together one at a time. Dental work. Medical screenings. Haircuts. Legal help. Court appearances. A hot meal. A new pair of boots. Sometimes, a place to sleep overnight before the next day’s services begin.

This year, more than 500 veterans walked through. And Tucker Disability Law was proud to be there as a sponsor.

Why Tucker Disability Law Sponsored Operation Stand Down

We talk a lot in this firm about not giving up on veterans. It’s our motto, and it’s not something we say lightly. But “We Never Give Up” can’t just be words on a website. It has to show up in how we spend our time — and where.

Operation Stand Down is one of those places. We were proud to sponsor this year’s event, and even more proud that along with myself, the entire VA team came out to be there in person, including attorneys Daniel Clarke and Madison Cannon  — along with most of the firm’s staff. We had a booth, and it stayed busy.

We didn’t go to hand out business cards. We went because a lot of the veterans who walk through Stand Down have been told “no” by the VA somewhere along the way. Some of them gave up years ago. Some of them never knew they had a claim worth filing. And sometimes, all it takes is a conversation — five minutes at a folding table — for someone to realize the door isn’t closed after all.

What Operation Stand Down Actually Looks Like

If you’ve never been to a Stand Down event, it’s hard to describe. Imagine a county fair where every booth gives something away — but instead of cotton candy and ring toss, it’s dental cleanings and dentures, medical exams, eyeglasses, chiropractic care, acupuncture, haircuts, employment counseling, financial assistance, and a courtroom where a judge clears old fines and helps veterans get their driver’s licenses restored.

It’s hard work made joyful. And the numbers from last year’s event tell the story:

  • 143 veterans received dental services, including extractions, fillings, cleanings, and dentures.
  • 92 veterans received medical screenings. 35 got vision care. 9 urgent care cases were handled on-site.
  • 175 veterans participated in mental health and Whole Health workshops.
  • 61 court cases were heard at the event. Almost $46,000 in fines and fees were cleared.
  • 12 veterans got their driver’s licenses restored — opening the door to jobs, housing, and independence many had been locked out of for years.

These aren’t small things. For a veteran living out of a car, a restored license is the difference between staying stuck and starting over. For a veteran who hasn’t smiled in a photo in a decade because of missing teeth, a free set of dentures is dignity restored.

What Our Team Took Home With Us

Our team came back to the office tired and quieter than usual. That happens after Operation Stand Down.

You spend two days listening to veterans tell you about claims they filed in 1998 and never heard back on. About denials they didn’t know how to challenge. About brothers and sisters who served alongside them and never made it home, or who came home and never quite made it back. You hear stories that don’t fit neatly into a legal file. And you remember why this work matters.

We came home with a long list of veterans we promised to follow up with. We came home with a renewed appreciation for One Community Now and the volunteers who make Operation Stand Down happen year after year. And we came home reminded that the work we do — the disability claims, the appeals, the audits — is one piece of a much larger picture. A veteran getting their teeth fixed and a veteran winning their claim are part of the same story: a person reclaiming what they earned.

John and Kristy Tucker with volunteers from Operation Stand Down

This is what Operation Stand Down is really about. Kristy (my wife) and I had the chance to spend time with two of the volunteers who keep this event running. I came home reminded of something simple: every veteran who walks through those gates is met by someone who decided to show up for them. That’s a powerful thing.
