A Personal Journey to Better Health
When was the last time you thought about your health and wellness and how it impacts your ability to lead your law firm?
As a disability attorney and law firm owner, I spend my days fighting for people who face physical and mental challenges, as well as running a business. I’d become an expert at understanding how health conditions affect my clients’ lives. Yet ironically, I was neglecting my own wellbeing in the process.
Last summer, approaching my 58th birthday, I had a wake-up call. The stiffness in my joints and persistent back pain I’d been ignoring could no longer be dismissed. As someone who advises clients on managing disabilities daily, I recognized the warning signs in myself.
I decided it was time to practice what I preach.
Taking the First Step
“All right, I’ve got to make a change,” I told myself.
I chose Pilates – something completely outside my comfort zone. That first class was humbling. I wasn’t as flexible as the other participants, and honestly, it was somewhat embarrassing.
But I kept showing up.
The Transformation
Fast forward to today: I just completed my 100th Pilates class. The transformation has been nothing short of remarkable. The stiffness is gone. The back pain and joint pain have disappeared. My flexibility now rivals what I had in my twenties.
Perhaps even more significant has been the mental shift. My energy levels have increased dramatically. My thinking is clearer, my focus sharper, and my creativity is better.
As a disability attorney who coaches other lawyers, I’ve noticed this wellness journey has made me a better advocate and mentor. I have more stamina for difficult cases, more patience for challenging clients, and more insight when advising fellow attorneys on practice management.
We invest in our teams, our law firms, and our clients. We spend hours perfecting arguments about the importance of accommodations and self-care for our clients. But how often do we invest in ourselves?
Our health isn’t a luxury – it’s a professional necessity. Our health directly impacts our ability to:
- Maintain the mental stamina needed for complex cases
- Empathize effectively with clients
- Lead our teams through challenging situations
- Build sustainable practices that serve our communities long-term
Your Challenge
Here is my challenge to you: Today, take one step to enhance your wellness.
That step might be:
- Getting some exercise or other form of movement
- Setting a firm boundary around work hours
- Implementing a true lunch break or getting some rest
Whatever it is, take that first step. Then make a plan for a second step. Those small actions will compound, enhancing not just your personal wellbeing, but your effectiveness as an advocate and business owner.
Remember, your most valuable asset isn’t your law firm, and it’s not your clients. It’s you.

Let’s Grow Our Business Together!
Generating new business is one of the best ways to ensure your business is growing in the right direction.
I’ve been practicing law for over 34 years. During that time I’ve had the privilege to both receive and give client referrals from fellow attorneys.
Client Referrals are one of the most powerful ways to grow your business. That’s why last year I decided to start my own Attorney Referral Partnership Program.
I know you’ve heard of other attorney referral programs but I’m offering something different:
- Including a monthly newsletter with business tips
- Ongoing disability education so you can qualify the client’s situation
- And soon, an individual portal that keeps you informed of your case referrals every step of the way
There’s no obligation so it’s a complete win-win for everyone.
If you have questions, don’t hesitate to call me at 866-828-4287.
