2025 SSI Benefits Increase: What You Need to Know

Tucker Disability Law | October 15, 2024

If you’re receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits, you’ll see an increase in your payments starting in 2025. The Social Security Administration (SSA) recently announced a 2025 SSI benefits increase of 2.5%, which means a little extra money each month to help cover living expenses. This annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) is tied to inflation, ensuring that your benefits rise in line with the cost of everyday goods and services.

Starting in 2025, the maximum monthly SSI payment for individuals will increase from $943 to $967. Couples who receive SSI will see their maximum payment go up from $1,415 to $1,450 per month. Some states add extra money on top of the federal benefit, so your payments could be even higher depending on where you live.

What Is COLA and How Does It Affect SSI?

The 2025 SSI benefits increase comes from a COLA, or cost-of-living adjustment. COLA is an automatic annual increase that adjusts your SSI payments to match inflation. When the cost of everyday items like groceries and rent goes up, COLA ensures that your benefits also increase, helping you keep up with those rising expenses. Even though inflation has started to cool down, the 2.5% increase for 2025 will still offer some financial relief for SSI recipients.

When Will You See the 2025 SSI Benefits Increase?

If you’re one of the nearly 7.5 million people receiving SSI benefits, the 2025 SSI benefits increase will start on December 31, 2024. This means that your January SSI payment will reflect the higher amount. If you also receive Social Security benefits, those payments will increase starting in January 2025.

How Will You Find Out Your New SSI Amount?

The SSA will send out letters in early December to notify you of your new benefit amount. The notices will include your updated monthly payment, any deductions, and when the increase will take effect. You can also check your new benefit amount online if you have an account on the Social Security website. The SSA has redesigned these notices to make them easier to read, using plain language and a clear, one-page format.

How Does This SSI Increase Compare to Previous Years?

While the average COLA over the past decade has been about 2.6%, recent years have seen higher increases due to inflation. In 2023, SSI recipients received an 8.7% increase, and in 2022, the COLA was 5.9%. Although the 2025 increase of 2.5% is smaller, it still helps SSI beneficiaries keep up with the cost of living, especially as inflation slows down.
